What footwear is best to avoid winter slip and falls?

On Behalf of Cassian & Carter LLC | Oct 10, 2022 | Personal Injury, Slip And Fall

In the Midwest, fall can also bring snow and ice, so you can never start preparing for winter weather too soon once summer ends. The best prevention for slip and falls is to choose the right footwear.

There are a few characteristics you want to pay attention to when choosing what you wear on your feet to avoid potentially disastrous falls.

Fit

When choosing footwear, you need to make sure they will fit when wearing thicker socks. While you might buy them in warmer weather when you are wearing light socks, you need to think ahead. If your shoes are too tight, you may be less likely to wear them, so they will not do you much good. Buy them to fit with the socks you will wear when the weather turns colder.

Tread

The most important factor when choosing your shoes or boots is the tread. You will want to make sure they have a rubber sole. They give you better traction and provide a sturdier option than other options. Also, go for a thicker tread. You want to avoid anything with a smooth bottom that will give you no traction on a slippery surface.

Style

You want to go for function over fashion. The best-looking boots may not provide you with the best safety features. You should choose something without a heel that has good padding on the inside to keep your feet warm and dry.

Choosing the right footwear could mean the difference between safe walks in the winter and an accident that could land you in a cast for weeks. Remember that you can always change your shoes once you get to where you are going, so do not avoid a sturdy pair of snow boots because you do not like the way they look.
