What conditions can increase the risks of anesthesia?

On Behalf of Cassian & Carter LLC | Dec 29, 2021 | Medical Malpractice

If you need to have surgery, you will usually require anesthesia. The combination of medications will help you to get through the procedure without feeling pain or being aware of what is happening. You simply go to sleep and wake up after everything is done.

However, there are some risks with anesthesia, including death. The American Society of Anesthesiologists explains that while everyone will have some risks, there are certain health conditions that increase the chances you will have complications.

Smoking

Smokers often have more issues with anesthesia because of the lung damage from the habit. They also have an increased chance of heart-related issues after surgery.

Obesity

Being overweight makes it more difficult for the doctor to administer the medication. It can also lead to issues with determining how much medication to give you. Another problem associated with excess weight is managing your breathing throughout the procedure.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea increases the risks of the medication because of breathing issues. It can make it tough to regulate oxygen and maintain breathing throughout the surgery.

Age

Older people have a harder time with anesthesia. Because of age-related health issues, there is an increased chance of complications. People with lung or heart disease may have more trouble than others.

It is important that before any surgery, you are completely honest with your doctor about any health conditions. You also should discuss your concerns about any potential complications or risks you have. You need to address your worries and ensure your doctor understands your fears and explains everything to you completely.
