Riding a motorcycle can be a thrilling experience but it also comes with the added risk of injury or death if an irresponsible driver does not see you. One possible injury is road rash. This could happen if another vehicle hits you and causes you to impact against a hard surface that scrapes your skin.

Road rash can range from minor to serious in nature. You may need emergency medical attention if you suffer a particularly serious wound. Medical News Today explains some reasons why a road rash can be a threat to your health.

The severity of a road rash

Minor road rashes generally require home remedies like ointments, gauze and over-the-counter medicines. But if you suffer a strong impact across the hard pavement, you may experience a wound that cuts deeply into your skin and damages your nerves. This can result in a particularly painful abrasion.

Skidding across pavement can also break one or more of your bones or damaged muscles. Additionally, you may pick up foreign objects like glass or metal in your rash wounds. You will need medical treatment as soon as possible to prevent infection. You may also prevent permanent scarring from the foreign objects in your wound.

The danger of infections

Experiencing a road rash cuts open your skin and expose your body to infection from harmful pathogens. Foreign debris can deposit bacteria into your wound, which could then spread to different areas of your body. But even if you avoid contact with dirt or glass in your rash wound, airborne substances may still enter your body unless you seek medical treatment.

Recognize when your rash is serious

There are different symptoms of a dangerous road rash. You may experience a fever. You may smell an odor from the wound or notice your wound is swelling or has discoloration. Your wound may also secrete pus or feel warm. Even if your rash does not exhibit these signs, you may notice that your wound is not healing.

If you are fortunate enough to survive a motorcycle accident, be sure that you receive the proper treatment for your injuries. If necessary, you may explore holding the negligent party liable for the accident.
